Alex Pomeroy
Modern History EDITOR
Hello! I am an ESRC-funded PhD student at Lancaster University, having already undertaken a History BA and Military and International History MA with the department. My MA research has featured previously, in Issue 17 of EPOCH!
My PhD builds upon the findings of my MA thesis, which explored the treatment of Irish citizens in the British military by the Irish state and society during the war years, by researching the commemoration and memory of the Second World War in Ireland. This study concerns the peculiarities of Irish commemoration and commemorative culture since 1945, both as a neutral state during the conflict and as a result of the legacies of British colonial rule in Ireland. I aim to achieve this through an analysis of Irish veteran’s experiences upon returning home from British military service, as well as studying the condition and construction of memorials dedicated to the Second World War across the nation. In so doing, I hope to build upon existing studies of Irish cultural memory and demonstrate the complexity of ‘Irish’ identities throughout the twentieth century.
My personal research interests go beyond the themes explored within my PhD. As a long-time supporter (sufferer?) of Burnley F.C., I enjoy exploring the historic relationship between sport and society, whilst a healthy diet of museum trips and documentaries throughout my childhood has ensured a lifelong interest in military and industrial histories too.
I welcome submissions with any connection to my areas of interests and expertise!
